E-Rate FAQ
-
What E-Rate categories does Factor Technology Solutions support?
Factor Technology Solutions specializes in Category 2 (Internal Connections) projects. This includes Managed Internal Broadband Services (MIBS) and the management of equipment like switches, routers, and wireless access points. We do not provide Category 1 (Internet access) services.
-
How does Managed Internal Broadband Services (MIBS) help school districts?
MIBS allows districts to use E-Rate funding for the ongoing management and monitoring of their network. This transforms a major technical burden into a predictable operational expense, ensuring your network is patched, secure, and high-performing year-round without adding internal headcount.
-
Is your pricing model aligned with the school fiscal year?
Yes. Our services are designed specifically for K-12 education. We offer predictable, flat-rate pricing that aligns with school budgets and E-Rate funding cycles to ensure your technology remains sustainable long-term.
-
How do you ensure our district remains E-Rate audit-ready?
We maintain a compliance-first approach. This means we keep detailed documentation, maintain a clear separation between eligible and non-eligible services, and coordinate with vendors to ensure all activities meet federal program rules and regulations.
-
What is the e-rate program?
The E-Rate program, formally known as the Schools and Libraries Program, is a federal initiative that provides discounts to help eligible schools and libraries obtain affordable high-speed internet and telecommunications services.
Managed by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) under the direction of the FCC, the program was established to ensure that all students, regardless of their location or economic status, have equitable access to digital learning tools.
-
What is e-rate funding for schools?
E-Rate funding is a discount mechanism, not a direct cash grant. Eligible schools receive discounts ranging from 20% to 90% off the cost of eligible equipment and services. The exact discount rate depends on the percentage of students eligible for the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and whether the school is located in an urban or rural area.
Funding is divided into two specific categories, Factor Technology only deals with Category 2 Funding.
-
Category 1 (C1): Services that bring internet connectivity to the school building (e.g., fiber-optic lines and monthly internet service).
-
Category 2 (C2): Equipment and services that distribute connectivity inside the building (e.g., Wi-Fi access points, switches, and cabling). This includes Managed Internal Broadband Services (MIBS), which Factor Technology Solutions specializes in.
